Smartshares are part of the worldwide ETF phenomenon

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are a relatively unfamiliar investment category in New Zealand, but have become one of the fastest growing investment categories in the world.

Today, in the USA there are over 130 ETFs accounting for over US$166 billion of investment. In Europe there are over 120 ETFs on offer to investors, tracking a multitude of sharemarkets and industry sectors.

The growth of ETFs has been most pronounced in recent years. Over the last seven years, the amount of money in ETFs around the world has increased by 80% a year.

ETFs track indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the NASDAQ and MSCI indices and trade on most major international exchanges around the world.
